Scented drawer liners: Either you hate them or you don't know about them—but maybe you should try loving them, instead. These vintage fragrance-filled pops of color and pattern seriously deserve a comeback.

A recent conversation with friends brought about two general responses to scented drawer liners: they remembered them from childhood and hated the smell, or they'd never heard of them. I've always known about drawer liners—my grandma used them everywhere. Every hug from her forced the scent into my nostrils, and to this day, the slightest whiff of rose takes me right back to her. While the memory is fond, the smell still makes me queasy.

I loved the idea of drawer liners, but never considered them in my own home because I wrongly assumed they only came in the completely overpowering, overstimulating English Rose scent. Fast forward to a few months ago when I was on the hunt for a new laundry detergent. I found my way to The Laundress where, lo and behold, I came across scented drawer liners! They had two scents: classic and cedar. I chose classic, and the scent is perfect. It's a combo of lily of the valley, jasmine, sweet musk, sandalwood, and citrus, and it smells like the laundry room after a day of doing fresh laundry.

Benefits of scented drawer liners

Scented drawer liners are great to look at, but they have other qualities, too:

They overpower funky smells. Vintage and antique furniture is great, but sometimes comes with scents you'd rather leave in the past. Antiques aren't the only guilty parties: brand new furniture made with treated wood can smell just as bad, if not worse!

Should you find yourself in this predicament, first try airing out the furniture. While you always want to try to completely remove the smell by washing and airing out the piece, scented liner can help the wood absorb the new smell.

They keep clothing and linens smelling fresh. If you put time and effort into making sure your laundry smells delicious and fresh, add scented liners to your bag of tricks. Depending on how often your drawers are open, the scent will stay strong or maybe fade a bit—but either way, your laundry will start to faintly pick up the scent. Be sure to find a scented liner that complements your detergent so they don't compete.

They make tidying up a breeze. Whether you're moving into a new apartment or you're switching out your clothing for the season, adding a liner makes tidying so much easier. Liners not only help hide less-than-desirable situations, but also provide a fresh-smelling, smooth surface that can be easily swept clean with a duster.

How to install drawer liners

To install the liner, I measured the drawer's width, cut the excess off, then pressed the paper into the drawer starting at the front. Once I reached the back, I folded the excess over and cut it off. The weight of your clothing should help the sheets lay flat, but if you find them popping up you can use something like adhesive putty to keep them pressed down.

When the liners are first out of the package, the scent can be pretty strong. That lessens the longer they're left out in the open. To keep the scent longer, put them in your drawers right away and try not to leave the drawers open for extended periods of time.

Change out your scented liners when the seasons change and you're swapping out clothing.

The best part? Once they've lost their scent, you can reuse the paper for a craft project or to line the shelves in another part of your home!
